Selling a Home With a SunStrong Lease or PPA (Former SunPower or Sunnova)

If you signed a lease or PPA with SunPower or Sunnova, the company you deal with when you sell is probably SunStrong Management. You didn't choose it, and your buyer has never heard of it. SunStrong's process starts when you have a buyer, so the groundwork has to be done before then.

Why SunStrong is on your bill

SunStrong Management is a servicer. It manages residential solar leases, PPAs, and loans that were originated by other companies.

  • Former SunPower customers: SunStrong's help center says it "took over account management for 110,000 former SunPower customers." Its SunStrong Connect app replaced the old mySunPower app.

  • Former Sunnova customers: Sunnova's own site says SunStrong "has assumed responsibility for servicing and managing most in-service customer systems." → Selling a home with a Sunnova system

  • Some others: SunStrong's sale form also lists GoodLeap and PosiGen accounts.

Your lease or PPA didn't end when SunPower or Sunnova went through bankruptcy. The agreement continues, and it still has to be dealt with at your sale, usually through a transfer to your buyer.

Not sure you're a SunStrong customer? SunStrong suggests looking for its emails (sent to the primary account holder at the time of the transition) or a bill dated after the transfer. If you're still unsure, call its Customer Care team.

What SunStrong's home-sale form asks for (checked October 13, 2026)

SunStrong's homeowner page says: "Selling your home? We handle the contract transfer process in-house so it doesn't hold up your closing." Here's how the process starts.

Former Sunnova (and GoodLeap/PosiGen) accounts. Use SunStrong's online inquiry form and choose "Sell or refinance my home." The form requires:

  • Your system ID or account number (Sunnova System ID #, GoodLeap Account Number, or PosiGen System #): Your bill, welcome email, or agreement

  • Buyer's name, phone number, and email: Only exists once you have a buyer

  • Title company name, contact name, phone, and email: From your attorney once the deal is in contract

  • Estimated closing date: From the contract of sale

Former SunPower accounts. The form sends you to SunStrong's separate support portal page, "Refinance, Ownership Transfers & Home Sales." Its "Selling Your Home" form is for "changes to current lease due to sale of your home." It "must be completed prior to final close of sales."

What the current pages don't say: a turnaround time, a fee amount, or a credit standard for your buyer. SunStrong's earlier "Selling My Home" page (as archived March 9, 2026; that URL no longer shows this text) said the transfer "may take up to 30 days after buyer and title/escrow/attorney information is received," that the buyer "is required to meet credit requirements," and that "a non-refundable processing fee is required before the transfer agreement will be sent for signatures." We treat that as history, not a promise, and ask SunStrong for its current requirements in writing.

The Long Island problem: the form needs a buyer, and the clock starts late

On Long Island, attorneys handle the contract of sale, and the title company is often ordered after contracts are signed. SunStrong's form needs both of those before it can be submitted. So the transfer can't start at the listing appointment the way I'd like. The preparation can, though:

Before you list - The complete agreement: every page, exhibit, and addendum. The transfer and buyout terms are often in an exhibit, not the main pages. - Your system ID / account number and the name exactly as it appears on the account - A current bill showing the payment and escalator, so buyers see the real number - A written request to SunStrong for current transfer requirements, prepay figures, and buyout figures, so you know your fallback if a buyer doesn't qualify - A UCC filing search in both possible offices

At listing - The agreement summary goes to buyers' agents up front: monthly payment or per-kWh rate, escalator, remaining term, and the fact that the buyer must be approved by SunStrong

The day the contract is signed - The form goes in with buyer and title details. I keep the confirmation and case number and follow up in writing.

Through closing - Track the SunStrong approval alongside the buyer's mortgage approval, and coordinate the UCC filing treatment with the title company.

The verified tracker I maintain flags SunStrong lease and PPA transfers as the biggest home-sale bottleneck for former SunPower and Sunnova homes. That's not a reason to panic. It's a reason not to wait.

What SunStrong doesn't handle

SunStrong's form states that it "does not provide maintenance services for customers who outright own their systems (e.g. Cash purchase or paid off Lease/Loan/PPA)." It also tells homeowners to contact their original installer about installation issues.

So if you bought your SunPower system for cash, or paid off the agreement, SunStrong isn't your transfer path. There's no agreement to transfer. The question becomes warranties and documentation. → Selling a home with owned solar · When your installer is gone

How I help SunStrong sellers

  • Confirm SunStrong is actually the servicer for your account, and which form route applies (Sunnova-style form or the SunPower portal)

  • Assemble the transfer packet before you list so the request can go in the same day you have a signed contract

  • Get your fallback numbers early. The prepay and buyout figures go in front of you before we price, not after a buyer is declined.

  • Prepare buyers and their attorneys with the agreement terms up front

  • Follow up in writing and keep a dated record. I coordinate with your attorney and the title company.

I've worked in solar since August 23, 2010, and I teach real estate professionals how lease and PPA transfers work. I'm not an attorney. I don't interpret your agreement; I find the terms and put them in front of your attorney.

Frequently asked questions

My lease was with SunPower. Who do I contact to transfer it when I sell?

For most former SunPower lease and PPA customers, it's SunStrong Management. SunStrong's site says it took over account management for 110,000 former SunPower customers. Its sale form routes former SunPower customers to a separate "Refinance, Ownership Transfers & Home Sales" page. Check your latest bill to confirm.

Can I start the SunStrong transfer before I have a buyer?

SunStrong's form asks for the buyer's name and contact details, the title company, and an estimated closing date, so the request itself needs a buyer. Everything else can be done before you list: the full agreement, account details, current requirements in writing, and prepay and buyout figures.

How long does a SunStrong home-sale transfer take?

SunStrong's current pages don't publish a timeline. Its earlier home-sale page (archived March 2026) said the process "may take up to 30 days after buyer and title/escrow/attorney information is received." Plan for the possibility that it takes longer, and submit the request as soon as the contract is signed.

Does my buyer have to qualify with SunStrong?

SunStrong's earlier home-sale page said the new homeowner "is required to meet credit requirements." Its current pages don't publish a credit standard. Ask SunStrong in writing, and know your prepay and buyout figures in case the buyer isn't approved.

Is there a fee to transfer a SunStrong lease?

SunStrong's earlier page said a non-refundable processing fee is required before transfer documents are sent for signature. It didn't list an amount, and the current pages don't either. Ask for it in writing so it's on your net sheet.

I bought my SunPower system for cash. Does SunStrong need to be involved?

Generally no. SunStrong says it doesn't provide maintenance services for customers who own their systems outright. With no agreement to transfer, the work is documenting the system and its warranties for the buyer.

SunStrong isn't responding. What should I do?

Keep everything in writing, keep your confirmation or case number, and tell your attorney and the title company right away. I can't make any company move faster, and nobody can promise a date for another company's approval. What I can do is keep the request documented and moving.
